What is the Microbiome?

The microbiome is the collection of microbes that includes bacteria, fungi, viruses, that naturally live in and on our bodies. While we’ve been taught that bacteria are harmful and produce disease —a great number of bacteria actually play an essential role to maintain our health and wellness! These bacteria, called probiotics protect us against pathogens, support immune system health, and enable us to digest food to produce energy.

The microbiome is the interface between our body and the environment and determines how we respond to certain environmental substances. Our microbiome forms in the first years of life and changes over time in response to different factors including diet, lifestyle, and environmental exposures.

Why is the Microbiome so important?

The gut and skin are colonized by approximately a trillion microbes, including bacteria— the microbiome. When there is an imbalance of these bacteria, the microbiome can significantly affect how you look and feel.

The microorganisms in our gut extract nutrients from our food, make vitamins, and support immune function. The skin microbiome helps the skin barrier retain moisture and protect it from pollution and UV radiation.

Modern living erodes the diversity of these microbiota and research shows that a disruption in healthy gut microbiota makes us more susceptible to metabolic disease and skin problems.

Gut microbiome diversity

Studies into the gut microbiome of hunter-gatherers such as the Hadza in Tanzania showed that a diet rich in tubers and Baobab encouraged greater gut microbiome diversity. Diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease are virtually nonexistent in hunter-gatherer societies.

Meanwhile, research shows that increasing healthy microbiota in the gut improves energy, healthy weight management, performance and overall fitness and reduces a tendency to anxiety, depression, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular disease, and bone, joint, and skin disorders. Rewilding restores the microbiome to its original resilient state to prevent these metabolic disorders, slows the aging process and helps preserve skin health.

When the Microbiome is out of Balance

A loss of microbiome diversity is at the root of chronic inflammation, digestive problems, and skin aging. Living in an urban environment does not replenish the microbiome. Therefore, we must consciously take care of this ourselves and fill our microbiomes for optimal wellness.

The Solution for a Healthy Microbiome: Rewilding

Bring nature's benefits back into your life. Wild plants, pure and potent, revitalize microbiome diversity inside and out. Their benefits are far-reaching. Wild plants are essential for the biodiversity of the planet and your microbiome from gut to skin. Communities closer to nature show more excellent gut and skin microbiome diversity. The Hadza relies on a diet rich in Baobab and wild berries and has the most diverse gut microbiome in the world. Heart disease and cancer are virtually nonexistent. The Yanomami hunter-gatherers living in a remote region of the Amazon in Venezuela exhibit unprecedented skin microbiome diversity.

When it comes to improving our resilience, we can learn a lot from the wild, where plants faced with the enormous challenges of harsh environments concentrate powerful nutrients to preserve their health and beauty.

What is Rewilding?

Rewilding restores microbiome integrity and improves our resilience in a modern environment that increasingly challenges our wellness and skin health. Rewilidng re-establishes microbiome diversity inside and out through the power of plants.

"Because wild plants concentrate their nutrients in order to thrive in the harshest environment, they bring a unique resilience, providing the most potent benefits for health and beauty. Wild plants are rich in polyphenols and prebiotic fiber, essential nutrients for a healthy microbiome inside and out. These exceptional qualities and the importance of wild plants to earth’s biodiversity are what inspired me to start KAIBAE." — Dr. Luc Maes, KAIBAE co-founder

Baobab Rewilds Gut Health

Discover Baobab the Prebiotic Superfood from the wild and powerful African tree of life. Baobab fruit powder is 48% fiber, and 75% is soluble fiber. Soluble fiber is fermented in the gut to produce healthful probiotics.  Research shows that daily prebiotic fiber in Baobab profoundly and positively impacts our health, improving digestion, immunity, sleep, and mood.

Baobab increases probiotics in the gut

Baobab research showed that the prebiotic fiber in Baobab Fruit Powder increases the presence of Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria in the gut. Increasing the production of Lactobacillus and Bifidus bacteria has been shown to lower cholesterol, improve gut health and the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, and support healthy weight, allergies, and eczema.

Baobab increases short-chain fatty acid production.

Short-chain fatty acids, acetate, propionate, and butyrate, are produced by healthful bacteria in the gut; they are essential to gut barrier integrity and play an important role in all aspects of our health. Propionate is involved in producing glucose in the liver, acetate is necessary for synthesizing lipids, and butyrate is the preferred energy source for the gut.

Baobab protects gut barrier health

The gut barrier separates our internal milieu from the outside world. The gut barrier consists of a layer of mucus and intestinal cells. The mucus layer acts as a coat covering the cells in the intestinal wall and removes bacteria and toxins into the intestinal flow. The intestinal mucus layer controls the transfer of water and nutrients to the deeper intestinal cell layer and acts as a first line of defense against harmful compounds. Baobab fruit powder supports a healthy microbiome composition, decreases intestinal permeability, and increases mucus production for a healthy gut barrier.

Research on Baobab and the Gut Microbiome

The Gut Study

Research on the effects of Baobab Fruit Powder on the gut was performed in Belgium by leading experts using an in vitro simulation of the gastrointestinal tract.

About the SHIME Model

The Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME®) model is scientifically advanced in vitro model representing the physiological gastrointestinal tract.

Why it Matters

Baobab’s benefits for gut health have been known throughout Africa for centuries. Verifying these benefits with a gut microbiome study allows us to provide you with evidence-based products powered by Baobab.

"When you take care of your microbiome, it will take care of you—from smoother skin to better digestion, a stronger immune system, and overall well-being."
